Greg Machi, Principal

A Message from the Principal,
Welcome to our visitors and Moncure families! I'm so glad to have this chance to connect with you, and I'd love to take a moment to share a little about my background. My journey with Stafford County Public Schools began 28 years ago. My wife and I relocated from Pittsburgh to Stafford County in 1997, and we quickly became a deeply connected part of the community we now call home. In fact, my wife is a first-grade teacher right here in Stafford County, and all three of our children have attended and graduated from our county schools.
Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to serve as both a teacher and an administrator at three of Stafford County’s elementary schools. I began as a fifth grade teacher at Hartwood Elementary, and then became an assistant principal at Rocky Run Elementary School. For the past nineteen years, I have had the privilege of serving as Moncure’s principal. During this time, I have been fortunate to work with incredible staff, students, and families who inspire me every day to make Moncure the best it can be.
I’m a teacher first. As a school leader, I focus on supporting each child’s strengths while helping them overcome challenges. Every day, I look forward to watching our students grow, learn, and chase their dreams. I truly love what I do and take great pride in seeing that same excitement and passion shine through our students and staff.
Moncure opened its state of the art building in the fall of 2019. This year, we are proud to serve approximately 830 students from Kindergarten through Fifth grade. To meet the diverse needs of our learners, we have assembled a talented and dedicated staff, including classroom teachers, specialists, paraprofessionals, office staff, cafeteria workers, and custodians. Together, we work each day to create a welcoming environment where every child feels valued, supported, and inspired to succeed.
Our specialists provide weekly instruction in Art, Library, Music, and Physical Education. In addition, Moncure benefits from the expertise of eleven ESL staff members, three Reading Specialists, two Mathematics Specialists, an Intervention Specialist, an Innovative Learning Coach, and a Focus Resource Teacher.
Our motto, “Engage and Empower All Learners to Thrive,” reflects our commitment to helping every child reach their full potential. We also value the collaboration of our parents and community, whose time, energy, and dedication enrich the experiences of our students.
Moncure has a tradition of providing clubs and activities for our children. These include Tutoring, Chorus, Percussion Group, Art Club, Bears in Motion Running Club, Soccer Club, Basketball Club, WMES Broadcast Studio, our annual Spelling Bee, STEM Design Challenge Days, and many more. We take pride in keeping our school spirited and united. To honor our Bear mascot, we celebrate Bear Season each fall and spring. We are also proud of our House System, which builds community and supports our culture.
Moncure’s House System began in 2019. Each student and staff member spins a wheel to determine his or her House. Each of our six Houses represent a specific trait. While we are all part of Bear Nation, every House strives to earn the title of House of the Year. Students and staff practice our standards and expectations known as the “Vital 40” to earn House points. When students see staff following the Vital 40, they award a “Caught Ya” citation that adds to their House total. We gather each quarter for House Celebrations to honor students and staff and celebrate progress. Our student body loves cheering each other on during these events. At the end of the year, we crown both our House of the Year and Bear of the Year. These honors are displayed proudly in our gym.
As a school, we are proud of our accomplishments and excited for our future. Stafford County’s investment in Moncure is evident in our building and in the opportunities we provide. I look forward to creating many more memories with our students, staff, and community. We are always striving to improve and welcome your input. Please stop by to share your thoughts. We would love to hear from you.
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about Moncure and about me. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to email me at machigr@staffordschools.net.
Sincerely,
Greg Machi

Katrina Cannon, Assistant Principal

Hello Moncure Community,
I am honored and excited to join Anne E. Moncure Elementary School as your new Assistant Principal. It is a privilege to become part of a school community that is so clearly dedicated to inspiring and empowering every student.
My journey to Moncure has been shaped by a variety of experiences—both in education and in service. I am currently serving as a middle school assistant principal in Newport News, Virginia, and I bring with me over 30 years of leadership experience from my time as an Inspector General in the United States Army. My military career instilled in me a deep sense of integrity, service, and commitment—values I carry with me into every school I serve.
Throughout my time in education, I’ve had the opportunity to work as a classroom teacher, a reading interventionist, and a Response to Intervention (RTI) specialist. Each of these roles has strengthened my belief in the power of education to change lives and the importance of meeting each student where they are.
I earned my Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education from Francis Marion University, a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction from Regent University, and an Education Specialist certificate in Educational Leadership and Administration from George Washington University. I am also a proud graduate of the U.S. Army’s Intermediate Level Education Command and Staff General Officer College.
I look forward to working alongside the amazing staff, students, and families at Moncure. Together, I know we can create a safe, engaging, and supportive environment where every child can thrive. I can’t wait to meet each of you and begin this exciting journey together.
With gratitude,
Katrina Cannon
